BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) _ The state is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of the killer of a black bear.
State wildlife officials say the bear was killed either late Monday or early Tuesday in West Carroll Parish.
Bear hunting is illegal in Louisiana — and the black bear is considered a threatened species. The state estimates that fewer than 500 black bears exist in Louisiana.
The bear was found dead in an area where sightings have been common in recent years. |

A wounded grizzly bear, which was later euthanized, rests Sunday in Soldotna. Biologist Jeff Selinger said the bear had at least three gunshot wounds, all of which were a few days old. Selinger said the bear was on its last legs and looking for a place to curl up and die when it drew a crowd of about 100 people with cameras and cell phones at about noon Sunday at Mackey Lake Road and the Sterling Highway. No one had reported a bear shot in defense of life or property. |

Alberni-Clayoquot – Two bear cubs, orphaned after their mother was destroyed inside the Green Point campground last summer, were relocated recently to a remote watershed along the West Coast Trail. In an information bulletin released this week, Parks Canada said while the watershed has good bear habitat and little human activity, the cubs will have to establish their own territories, avoid resident bears – especially large males – and predators like wolves. The cubs were also outfitted with radio collars. |
