Hey, Spike! asks: Is fresh road-kill another Bumper the Bear?
Source: Summit Daily News (Frisco, Colorado) -  Jul 8, 2010
About 20 years ago, a bear was smacked out on I-70 near Frisco while making a Dumpster run. It was stuffed and became known as Bumper the Bear, mascot of the National Roadkill Museum.
Today, 12-year-old Bumper sits in the Schoolhouse Museum on Old Main Street Frisco with nary a mention of his notoriety.
And just down the street in Rob Philippe's Antique Train Barn Emporium is the National Roadkill Museum Outlet.
Bumper was the subject of a weekly column in the long-gone Ten Mile Times, which offered up tid-bits of local stuff along with recipes, menus, and oft-submitted T-shirts, Roadkill Helper, Canned Roadkill and Roadkill Red Wine. Even Denver's Westword did a cover story.
Right now Colorado Division of Wildlife authorities are looking for Bumper's brother, an even larger bear which was like-wise fatally injured when it was apparently hit by an as-yet-un-ID'd vehicle at Mile Marker 201 on I-70 on July 1.
The strangeness doesn't end there.

A 51-year-old Bailey man suffered bite wounds from a bear inside his home early Thursday morning.
The man discovered the bear in his basement and approached it in hopes of getting the animal to leave. The 320-pound, male bear was later shot and killed.
According to wildlife officers, the family heard sounds in their kitchen shortly after midnight on Thursday morning and quickly determined that a bear had entered the home. The man attempted to monitor the bear's whereabouts and was bitten as the bear tried to get past him.
A Division of Wildlife officer, responding alongside deputies from the Park County Sheriff's Office, located the bear outside the home and killed it.
"The instructions we give our wildlife officers are clear: Public safety is our first priority," said Reid DeWalt, area wildlife manager. "Bears that enter homes are a threat to public safety. When we're dealing with aggressive or habituated wildlife, people come first."

Fish and Game to trap grizzlies
Source: KTVB (Boise, Idaho) -  Jul 3, 2010

BOISE, Idaho -- The Idaho Department of Fish and Game says it will begin trapping grizzly bears in the Centennial Mountains in eastern Idaho near the Montana border and is asking visitors to heed bright orange warning signs and stay away.

Biologists with the agency plan to trap the bears after the Fourth of July in an area that runs from Henrys Lake to Interstate 15 near Spencer.

The agency says the warning signs will be placed at major access points where the trapping is being done with bait, snares and culvert traps.

The trapping is part of the state's contribution to the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team efforts, and is required under the Endangered Species Act to study grizzly bear distribution in the region.

Bear scare closes campsites near Aspen

ASPEN - Camping spots on upper Castle Creek Road were closed by the U.S. Forest Service Friday after a black bear invaded tents to get food Wednesday night and Thursday.
No one was hurt in either incident, according to Aspen-Sopris District Ranger Scott Snelson. Officials posted warning signs urging campers to make sure food was properly stored in vehicles after Wednesday's incident. When a bear attacked a tent at an unoccupied campsite on Thursday, agency officials decided to close the spaces rather than take chances.
"People have to take care of their food or we're going to end up with injured people and dead bears," said Snelson.
There is no campground in the area that was closed but designated campsites are scattered along the gravel portion of upper Castle Creek Road. The black bear invaded campsite number six, roughly 2 miles from the end of the pavement, on Wednesday night. Recreation staff supervisor Martha Moran said she didn't talk to the man directly, bu

A racket that startled the Taorminas awake in their Virginia City Highlands home just after midnight Wednesday morning "sounded like the house was coming down," said Tom Taormina.
The couple sprang from their bed. Midge ran upstairs to grab the rifle and Tom raced into the kitchen, switching on the light. Just inches from where he stood was the window, left open a crack to let in the night air, with its screen and drapes missing.
Tom stood there staring out into the blackness when something very strange happened.
"A paw came reaching inside trying to swipe at me," said Tom. "Then I see a bear occupying the entire front window."
He said he a did a "little backwards dance," then rushed forward screaming and banging on the glass.
It must have frightened the large black bear, he said, because as quickly as the two came face to face through the thin glass, the animal disappeared into the night.

Camping area near Aspen closes after bear trouble
Source: Aspen Times (Colorado) -  Jul 2, 2010
ASPEN - A camping area near Aspen is off limits to July Fourth campers after a black bear rummaged through two campsites.

No one was injured at the Castle Creek area in the White River National Forest, a remote area with undeveloped campsites. But the U.S. Forest Service closed it Friday to keep campers safe and help keep the bear - which has had no previous problems - from picking up more bad habits, spokesman Scott Snelson said.

The radio-collared bear entered a tent and feasted on granola, baked beans and chicken bones at a campsite on Wednesday and then visited Jeff Powell's site on Thursday, shredding his family's tent.

Powell, from Durango, said he had locked all his family's food, along with toothpaste and deodorant, in the car as a precaution following the earlier break in. The bear returned to the area while Powell was out for a bike ride and his wife and 2-year-old were hiking. A couple stopped by the side of the road later told him the bear was in

USFS sells, rents bear canisters in NV backcountry
Source: Tahoe Daily Tribune - News (California) -  Jun 30, 2010
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Most hikers and campers in the Sierra Nevada know they are not supposed to feed the bears. Now, the U.S. Forest Service is going to help make sure they don't.

The Carson Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest has started selling and renting bear canisters for back-country visitors. The canisters cost $75. They rent for $2.50 a day with an $82 deposit.

Bear canisters are not required in the Humboldt-Toiyabe as they are in Yosemite National Park and the Inyo National Forest. But Forest Service officials say they are the best way to protect humans and keep the bears natural in the wild.

Agency spokeswoman Lindsay Pulliam says they are so effective that wildlife biologists have observed bears walk away from a camp once they spot the containers.

Canister helps keep bears out of backpackers' victuals
Source: The Record-Courier (Nevada) - News -  Jun 28, 2010
If visitors to Jellystone Park had bear-proof canisters for their picnic baskets, Yogi Bear would have had to go back to nuts and berries.
The Carson Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is renting and selling bear canisters for back-country visitors.
Rental costs run $2.50 daily, and require an $82 deposit; canisters may also be purchased for $75 (plus tax). Although bear canisters are not required on the forest, all backpackers and stock users are strongly advised to use proper food storage methods. Bear canisters are required in Yosemite National Park and on the Inyo National Forest.
"The most effective method of food storage for backpackers is a bear-resistant canister," said Lindsay Pulliam, Visitor Information Service Specialist. "For stock users, the most effective method is bear-resistant panniers or steel drums," continued Pulliam. Bears cannot open any of these containers because they cannot gain a hold with their claws.
